The following procedure allows you to download and install a pristine vanilla copy of the last Skyrim SE version (1.5.97) before it was updated to Skyrim AE (1.6.317 or greater). The other option is to check Key press toggles and press X once. I think this may be because Active Effects on key is checked and it may not be obvious this the compass key. With this configuration, hold down X to see both the compass and the active effects HUD.
